Aengus Óg | Celtic Mythology | Not Reserved
Nickname: Pie
Age: 24
Personal DW:
Method of Contact: AIM: dmnthepatriots
Characters Played: Liquid Snake (
Character Info:
Name: Aengus Óg
Age: Nobody knows. Except maybe him. And he's not telling. He looks to be in his thirties but is likely centuries older.
Canon: Irish Mythology
Pull Point: Towards the end of The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne, before Diarmuid dies but after everything is seemingly sorted with Fionn.
Background Info:
History: Aengus at wikipedia!
Also: The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne, The Dream of Aengus and The Wooing of Etain.
Personality: Although to those who do not know him, Aengus might appear as a fairly clueless young man, he is far more intelligent than he appears. More so, he is far more prone to trickery than most. When someone is talking to him, they should watch his words carefully; verbal agreement to something that is a figure of speech is still agreement. He will use whatever options he has to resolve things in his favour. When it comes to stubborn people, he tends to do the ancient mythological equivalent of rolling his eyes and deciding not to bother arguing. He will find other ways to deal with them.
As a deity of love, poetry and youth, he is a known romantic, although one who prefers long-term relationships, regardless of the ways they end. While he has no qualms about sleeping with his brother's partner, he devotes himself utterly to one person at a time, unlike many deities of love in mythology. He is a poet, and enjoys singing; indeed, when he and Caer Ibormeith first married, they sang until people fell asleep for no less than 72 hours.
He prefers the simple life, closer to nature as it is. In his youth he expressed arrogant and prideful behavior but in his later years he appears to have softened up somewhat. While he deals with many knights, such as his foster son Diarmuid, and has blood on his hands from past events, he prefers to resolve things in a more... delicate matter. The times when he does kill are usually in vengeance, for instance when Midir was killed, or Etain driven away by his foster mother Fuamnach. He has less qualms about causing others to die, for instance the events in The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne, where he used illusions to trick Fionn into killing his own allies. Aengus is not a man who will back down when it comes to protecting those he cares about, and Diarmuid and Midir were top of that list.
Aengus is a loyal person when it comes to those he loves. The bonds he forges are strong ones and he is willing to do much for those upon whom he bestows them. Those who are the receivers of this bond find him generous and kind towards them. Even in death they may find him kind to them; the loss of Diarmuid grieves him greatly and he refuses to allow his body to be taken from him, instead choosing to breathe life into him each day so that he can speak to him for a time. Although whether this is kindness or cruelty is hard to tell. At the very least, he bears guilt over failing to protect him. It's mentioned at the time that he never stops watching him. So clearly he has no problems with stalking, seeing his son naked or watching him pee.
He can be long-winded at times, when he wants to be. Particularly when it comes to his advice. But then, this is a staple of mythology of the time and quite often he is shown as being a quiet person. He's also willing to abuse the hospitality of his actual father; during The Wooing of Etain, there are several situations whereupon he agrees to impossible things and then goes and "bewails" to his father, who then fixes things for him.
Despite that, he is a very outwardly friendly person, and one who does not have many enemies. In general he can be considered playful and lighthearted. However, he is not easy to manipulate.
As is common with intelligent people, there is the occasional moment of idiocy. For example, on top of the above "constant revival from the dead" issue, despite not eating for a year and becoming ill, he refrains from telling anyone the problem. He prefers not to speak up when he is distressed, even if it makes the situation worse.
Game Specific:
Arcana: Lovers
Justification: Amongst the Tuatha De Danaan, he is considered to be a deity of love. And out of love he makes many choices, some good, some bad. The lovers card also represents the issue of agreement, of which he is the required force. He is intuitive when he wishes to be and can be fairly wise... if not willing to misuse the trust of others.
Samples:
First Person Sample:
Not for one night since my arrival here has my sleep been so disturbed.
I asked a kind lady at the pharmacy what she advised, but only medicine was her solution. Alas, it seems I must simply endure this sleeplessness.
[A sigh. He drums his fingers lightly against the windowsill, staring off into the night.]
What counsel will you give me, o poor souls who also bear this lack of dreams? Recommend me a fine tale of romance of this age. Or regale me with one of your own, if you would wish to. If sleep evades me then I will rely on entertainment to pass the time.
Third Person Sample:
Exhilerating.
A new word he had learnt recently, but one that sufficed quite nicely. The golden rays of the sun setting in the east were cast over the flowers of the park like a cloaked arm, embracing them one last time. Aengus closed his eyes, feeling the dying warmth caress his skin.
How could it be that such a travesty against nature could exist in this future? He missed the soft whispers of the trees, the rustle of grass and the cries of the birds. Those that existed here were not the same somehow. The years had changed this world. Or had it indeed? For all he knew this world could be entirely different.
And for him to be plucked like a flower from its stem and deposited into a pot of this sort... it was truly unkind. But then, could that be considered a true analogy? Flowers were not expected to fight.
Persona, they had called it. An unnatural power that did not belong in the world he knew. What else could he do but obey? If it had the hope of restoring him to the world he knew, then he must fight. Not only for his own sake, but for that of his 'child', of the bright-faced, energetic knight that he had watched over for such a long time.
How unfortunate that they should be plunged into this situation near-powerless! But if it had to be, then he would endure it.
The gentle brush of rain against his skin did not earn so much as a flinch from him. Time was ticking. How long had he stood here? The sun was gone. All that remained was the chill of the early night. The faint chimes of-
-wait, was that a bell?
"MOVE IT, LOSER!" a voice called, and he leapt aside as fast as he could, stumbling and almost falling as the two-wheeled metal deathtrap shot past him. What in the world was that thing called, anyway? It did not matter. What did matter was the fact that his reverie had been broken quite rudely. He did not appreciate it.
The most he could do was gather himself and prance off into the night and rain in search of shelter. Stupid modern day machinery. Stupid human habits of building gigantic houses. Stupid Shadows trying to hurt his foster son.
Another night was beginning. It would be time to fight soon.
