Character Info:
Name: The Kid
Age: 21, about.
Canon: Bastion
Pull Point: One week after the Evacuation ending.
Background Info:
History: http://bastion.wikia.com/wiki/Caelondia / http://bastion.wikia.com/wiki/The_Kid
Personality: The Kid isn't easy to figure out from the get-go. A few things are immediately obvious, however. One, he is an absolute workaholic. If something needs to be built, found, or torn down, The Kid will miss several days of sleep and take grievous amounts of injuries until his task is finished, come hell or high water. Three, he usually keeps to himself. The Kid passes up any chance to talk about himself or personal experiences to the other survivors, especially a traumatizing experience caused by intoxication at Jawson's Bog. This tends to be mistaken for shyness, but The Kid can approach and talk to people both when necessary and to pass the time. He's not shy in the area of romantic prospects either, having had a girl he fancied before The Calamity broke the world apart, and Rucks hinted at the fact the Kid was very generous and kind to their second Ura companion, Zia. Finally, the Kid is very gruff and stoic. He works to complete the Bastion without complaint or even asking for context of how it would help beyond being a shelter for survivors, and spends more time focused on working towards that then anything else, often without a word between him or the others. If something needs to be done, he'll do it, world-ending catastrophe or not.
Of course, this is all just what's on the surface. The Kid has lived a hard life and it only recently gave him something like a break. Having never met his father and only having a sickly mother as family, he's more than familiar with solitude and having to work alone. As such, he tends to be very guarded about himself, talking as little as possible before getting back to work on a task of some kind. This is both a defense mechanism and a subtle show of a different side of the Kid: that is, he doesn't have a very high opinion of himself. This doesn't show outwardly, but The Kid feels considerable amounts of self-loathing topped off by survivor's guilt, post-Calamity. Failing, from his own perspective, to get money to help his mother quickly enough lead to her death, something he responded to immediately by signing up on a second turn on the Rippling Walls...something no citizen had ever done in the whole history of Caelondia, being what could be described as managing the Great Wall of China during a war. Add the elements and wild creatures from outside the city, and you have a good idea of what being a Mason at the Walls was like. As Bastion's story goes on and the Kid's problems to tackle get more and more dangerous and troubling, he becomes a heavier drinker. When under the effects of Jawson's Bog, he hears a voice taunting him and calling him a murderer and a petty thief, indicating The Kid feels tremendous amounts of guilt for scavenging for remains of The Old World and having to kill both creatures in the Wild and disturbing the petrified remains of people caught in The Calamity. Primarily, however, The Kid channels this misery into worse and worse working conditions: if a job has to be done, he'll do it. The more dangerous, the better. In his mind, this is to make up for his failures, and on some level, he may wish he can die on one of those jobs.
Despite all of this, however, The Kid is a very determined and compassionate individual. Despite everything he goes through and the length The Kid has to cross to repair the Bastion and the survivors' only hope, he manages to do so without any real complaint, pushing his workhorse ethic and how much physical punishment his body could take to the very limit to do so. Speak of, despite his aforementioned gruffness and self-loathing, The Kid is a very kind individual who will work to save his friends and loved ones no matter what the cost. When school didn't work out, him not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, he immediately signed on for the dangerous job at the Rippling Walls to get money to care for her. This is demonstrated in-game as well, The Kid carrying Zulf to safety despite both losing the most powerful weapon in his arsenal and taking several dozen arrows on his body as a result. This also shows he is forgiving and dedicated to his friends, Zulf having been the central antagonist after finding out another survivor's hand in the Calamity, nearly destroying the Bastion as a result.
To summarize, The Kid could best be described as a battered old vessel. It's clunky, it's not particularly sharp, and it's taken several beatings from both itself and others. But no matter what, he'll get the job done and do what he can to help.
Game Specific:
Arcana: Strength
Justification: If it's not fairly clear by now, The Kid is a strong-willed individual. World-ending catastrophes, several dozen arrows, burns, slashes, and more from both wild animals and Ura only manage to slow him down most of the time. He also cares deeply about others and is very passionate about work he has to be done, carrying it out to the bitter end. At the same time, the Kid is inadequate to himself, never being able to make up for his mistakes and shortcomings in his own mind and constantly drinking himself silly or taking worse working conditions to cope with it. He's also not very polite or formal most of the time, something that occasionally says hello to his heavy drinking habits.
Samples:
First Person Sample: [The Kid is holding up what seems to be a hammer. Yes, an ordinary hammer, the kind you can find in a toolshed. He's just staring at it with a look of disappointment, like he just watched his own best friend die in a disgracefully comical fashion.. He turns to the screen and casually tosses the hammer away. Glass shattering in the background can be heard.] Anyone know where to find a bigger hammer? Using a tiny thing like that for work...don't feel right. It don't feel right at all.
Third Person Sample:
The Kid didn't complain much whenever he was given work of some kind to do...in fact, thankless work done without question was a good way to describe him in general. However, something that juuust barely encompassed a scowl was appearing on his face. That is, if you could even see his face past all the absurd amounts of luggage he was carrying in his arms, on his shoulders and his back. He wasn't being paid for this, either. There was just a cute girl at the hotel who said she needed a little help with carrying her luggage to her room, and Kid just couldn't say no to a pretty face. That sort of mindset, he mused, might get him killed one day. Still, he's about halfway up a set of stairs before he feels his foot slip, letting out a surprised yell just in time to start tumbling down with all the heavy suitcases and luggage. He would reach the bottom in an undignified heap with several of the bags promptly colliding with him. He'd rest in this horrible, heavy dogpile from hell with complete stillness for a moment before grunting and pulling himself out of it, rubbing his head a little from the pain of the impact. Kid looks around himself, then towards the luggage, then towards the top of the stairs...and just sighs, picking up everything he can and preparing to start the journey all over again.
Shame nobody ever told him about elevators.
