Liquid Snake | Metal Gear | Non-Reserved | 2/3

[personal profile] shirtphobia 2012-03-10 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)

Background Info:
History: Liquid is the second of the three "sons of Big Boss", clones of the legendary soldier who defeated the Boss (MGS3). In 1972, as part of a secret government cloning program called Les Enfantes Terribles, Liquid was one of eight clone babies created. Six of those babies never reached the stage of birth, sacrificed to help the two that survived, Liquid and Solid. Both clones were genetically modified, Liquid gaining the superior genes and Solid gaining the inferior. A later clone was also created, Solidus. Liquid's real name was classified to the point where even the highest ranks of the military do not know it, and he in fact denies having one, claiming that soldiers such as they don't have names.

Shortly after birth, Liquid was sent to the UK, raised there as a soldier-in-training. During his youth he was constantly treated poorly by his "father", emotionally abused and starved of love. As a result, he became considerably cold hearted, though less so in his youth than he would become later. Liquid was constantly referred to as "inferior", treated as worthless and became obsessed with proving his superiority to his father and brother. He also developed a false belief that his father had willingly undertaken the LET program and chose him to be inferior, due to his father's habit of referring to him as the inferior of the twins.

In 1990, at the age of 18, he joined the British SAS (Special Air Service), becoming the youngest person to serve there. Shortly afterwards he was assigned to an SAS unit in Iraq, sent to track down and destroy mobile SCUD missiles. This, however, was a cover; he was also working for the SIS as a sleeper agent. He was caught and imprisoned for four years as a POW, an event that helped shape his extreme levels of paranoia regarding imprisonment. In 1994 he was rescued by the US government, though he never forgot. Five years later, in 1999, his father was killed by Solid Snake. Liquid developed a strong hatred for his brother following this incident, since he would never be able to get his revenge and prove himself by killing his father.

A year later, he joined FOXHOUND, his brother's unit. By that time Solid, then 28, had already retired despite his youth. Liquid became the field commander in his brother's absence. It was five years later that the next event of note in his life would occur.

In 2005 FOXHOUND was assigned to guard a nuclear disposal facility known as Shadow Moses, which doubled as a secret weapons development complex. Shadow Moses hosted a weapon known as a Metal Gear, a nuclear equiped bipedal giant robot that was considered to be the ultimate weapon. Under his command, the FOXHOUND Unit and the Genome Army took over the base, taking the world hostage under the threat of nuclear war. Their demands initially included the remains of his father, Big Boss, and a large amount of money. It was later discovered the money was to be used to cure the Genome Army, who had been genetically modified to become better soldiers but were dying from the modifications, indicating that Liquid was not entirely uncaring. Liquid's other intention was to recreate his father's dream, Outer Heaven, a military nation where soldiers would always have a place either on or off the battlefield. Solid Snake, his brother, was taken out of retirement and sent in to stop him. Unknown to either of them, at least at first, Solid had been infected with a deadly virus known as FOXDIE, which targetted specific genetic codes.

The terrorists had also taken into hostage two people of importance; the DARPA Chief Donald Anderson, one of the men involved in LET , and the president of ArmsTech, which had developed the Metal Gear, Kenneth Baker. Solid's orders were to retrieve them. Unfortunately for both Liquid and Solid, that plan was to fail dramatically. Revolver Ocelot, FOXHOUND's torture speciality, "accidentally" killed Anderson while trying to find out the startup codes for Metal Gear, one of which was held by each of the hostages. Their plan was not entirely lost, however. There was another method of starting up the weapon.

Prior to the game, Liquid poisoned Master Miller, the man who had trained Solid. Using the very basic disguise of wearing a shirt, tying his hair back and wearing sunglasses, he pretended to be Miller and guided the man throughout a good part of the game with the intent of leading him to his death. Decoy Octopus, another member of FOXHOUND disguised himself as Anderson to find out if Solid had any idea how to start up the Metal Gear, but was killed by a heart attack when FOXDIE activated. Soon after, Baker gave Solid a card, one of the three required to activate Metal Gear. In actuality it was three cards in one, but neither of the twins knew that at the time. Moments after, Baker also died from FOXDIE, alerting Liquid to the situation he had already been suspicious of.

As his brother worked his way through FOXHOUND towards him, Liquid continued to guide him, even after confronting him face to face several times. The first time they met in person was in battle; Liquid piloted his Hind-D to attack him, but was taken down by stinger missiles. Despite having no opportunity to use his parachute and escape, he not only survived but was able to return to the guise of Master Miller only moments later, leaving the parachute he failed to use as a marker for Solid to show he had survived. After Sniper Wolf captured his brother, Liquid mocked him with the knowledge of their sibling relationship, something Solid had been aware of, then left him to be tortured and imprisoned by Ocelot. At one point Liquid also tricked his brother into activating the Metal Gear with the Pal Card by staging a conversation as Liquid with Ocelot.

He also led his brother to be distracted with the treachery of the woman who developed FOXDIE, rather than paying attention to the other traitor in their ranks. It was only once his codec was traced back to Shadow Moses that he revealed himself as Liquid over the Codec that passed for a communications device. Soon afterwards, they met in person again.

Liquid explained the situation with FOXDIE to his brother, seeming entirely at ease despite the gun pointed at him and the factor of FOXDIE itself. He had come to the conclusion that FOXDIE was harmless to him, since their "genetic code" was identical. He also revealed that he had a spy in the Pentagon who had given him the information he needed. Following this talk he piloted Metal Gear REX in order to attack Solid, killing a former friend of Solid's in the process. However, the Metal Gear was defeated. Despite the explosion, he not only survived, but kept going. Solid had been knocked out by it, and he carried him up to the top of the ruined machine himself, despite his injuries. While his brother was unconscious, he made contact with the people behind FOXDIE - the Patriots - through Solid's nanomachines, threatening them.

Once his brother awoke, tied up and helpless, Liquid conversed with him a little longer, explaining his own views on the situation. He expressed his desire for soldiers such as them to have a purpose other than being used for political gambits, and noted that his brother had a darker side expressed only in battle. He also revealed the presence of Meryl Silverburgh, the daughter of one of Solid's friends, and the timed bomb on her back. The two fought once more, on top of Metal Gear, though Liquid once again lost. Despite his fall, as Snake and his friends attempted to escape, Liquid followed them, still determined to kill them and still able to fire. It was only FOXDIE that spared them his determined rage; just outside Shadow Moses, Liquid finally submitted to the virus. Presumably, his weakened physical condition was all that the virus needed to take hold.

His arm was transplanted to replace that of Ocelot's, who had lost his own during a fight, and his body was taken by the Patriots. Although Solid later used it to fake his own death, Big Mama and Liquid Ocelot were able to use it to replace the damaged body of his father, alongside that of Solidus. In the meantime, however, his ghost took the opportunity to possess the man who took his arm, attempting to get revenge still, until the arm was eventually replaced.
Personality: In essence, Liquid is the id to Solid's superego. No matter how calm he may act, there is always a high level of anger and hatred within him, just beneath the surface. Liquid's past has instilled in him a lot of twisted views of the world, many of which are expressed in bitter rants and spur of the moment explosions of rage. Of all of the Snakes, Liquid is the one that talks the most. Sarcasm and anger laces his words regularly and despite the occasional formality of his words it can never be forgotten that he is a rather unstable person. Thanks to his upbringing he is rather de-humanised compared to his father. While he is extremely intelligent, he tends to rely more on instinct and spur of the moment decisions. When he does strategize, however, he can be deadly. The Shadow Moses incident was the result of one of those strategies. He displayed sharp cunning and a heavy lack of morals, sacrificing anyone necessary to accomplish his goal. Once he had set his eye on it, he was focused on it wholely and refused to back out even when his body was heavily damaged.

Liquid is shown often to be the closest of the twins to Big Boss - despite Solid looking and sounding more like him. More accurately, he is closer to the older Big Boss of the early games in that he has grown tired of the Patriots and their kind using soldiers such as him. Rather than remaining a tool to the corrupt, he became obsessed with the idea of Outer Heaven, his father's dream. It was made clear that he did not care who was sacrificed to make this, although he did redirect the first nuclear launch to a test site, rather than demonstrate on a town or city. Liquid is also, as was Big Boss, the more "leader-like" of the twins. While he often is portrayed - and rightly, as I will elaborate - as a lone wolf, he was still able to draw the members of FOXHOUND and the Genome Army to help in this goal. I say it is right to call him a lone wolf as despite his leader status, Liquid appears to be emotionally distant from everyone he meets. Even when his own allies are killed, he barely responds. Despite that, it appears he does have a softer side, as one of the things he was demanding as a terrorist was the cure to the fatal gene therapy of his soldiers.

Supplementary materials indicate that he was in active combat by the age of thirteen, and as he grew up without a mother and with the belief that his father hated him in favour of his brother, it is fair to assume he grew up mostly isolated of affection. This may explain his lack of attachment to others. This may also explain his callous disregard for human life.
When it comes down to it, Liquid is also the most aggressive of the Snakes. While he follows in his father's footsteps worryingly closely, it is all with one goal in mind. To surpass his brother and prove - to himself, more than anything - that he is not inferior, as he was led to believe, because of his genes. It becomes quite clear also that Liquid has focused all of his anger on his past onto his family; the father that hated him and the brother that was always just too perfect in everyone's eyes. Right up until the end of the game, he seems unafraid. He takes a helicopter out in an Alaskan blizzard to shoot down two enemy planes, faces an explosion, looks down the barrel of a gun and through none of it all is there anything but sarcasm and scorn. As a result, he is more of a risk taker

At least in one version of the game, he is shown to be prone to randomly flipping, somersaulting and even just walking on railings. His hands are almost never idle. He is very, very expressive and physical. There are moments when he does appear sad about their past, although these are swiftly dismissed and it is almost never expressed in his words or voice. He displays a highly cocky nature, although this may be more of an overcompensating cover for how much he fears he is inferior. For Liquid Snake has particularly low self-esteem but keeps it hidden behind an act of high arrogance. He has a high standard to which he holds himself to.

He has a notable formality in the way he speaks and he has a tendency to keep up a stoic attitude when outside of battle or when not incensed. He does have strong self-control and a high level of determination; he'd have to be determined to keep going after taking all that damage. Thanks to his time as a POW, he shows signs of C-PTSD. He is also extremely paranoid. Thanks to his childhood, he also does not understand affection very well and he finds it hard to relax at the best of times.

Liquid is also extremely bitter and prone to long-winded rants when pressed. Although he's generally rather cold in attitude, he does have a softer side and dislikes seeing people used or taken advantage of unless it's to serve his own purposes. If you do manage to become someone he likes he will protect you with his life, though it's a slow and difficult process to get that close to him. Liquid does not trust anyone unless they work for him, and even then he's rather paranoid. Although he isn't openly afraid of anything, even going so far as to turn his back on a hostile enemy pointing a gun at him, he does react very, very badly to being restrained, even going temporarily insane and possibly homicidal if the restraints are collars or shackles. However, unless he actively hates you, he won't get himself injured trying to hurt you unless you're threatening him.

There are only two people that Liquid actively hates; his brother, Solid Snake and his father, Big Boss, also known as Naked Snake. Things he dislikes, however, include disrespect, restraints, being called inferior, losing a battle, being manipulated, being ill, being unable to see the sun and carrots. He isn't very good with non-weapons-related technology such as computers; he tends to leave that to others rather than get irritated to the point of shooting the poor device. He also takes rather good care of his health outside of battle, refusing to drink unless it's a special occasion and never smoking or doing other things that might damage his health. However, he is one of the Snake siblings, so food gets him in a very good mood. Like his father and brother, he does have a love of boxes and finds them calming to sit inside.

His development in the second game is minimal, but defines a point that was not often mentioned in the first game - that Liquid is determined to destroy the Patriots. Despite his hatred of his brother, the ghostly Liquid does not actively pursue him; although he attacks him at least twice, both times Snake had come to him. He is more concerned with the larger matter, most likely an example of how fixated he becomes on a target.

It seems he is also capable of absorbing information remarkably fast; by the age of 33, he is already fluent in seven languages. He works best when directly facing a foe and his attitude tends to easily hide the fact he is a very capable soldier, making it easy to underestimate him.
Game Specific:
Arcana: Emperor
Justification: The Emperor Arcana focuses on several relevant aspects. Liquid is the one who struggles the most against authority, asserting his own in place of that of the Patriots. He prefers routine and desires power and strength above all else. Control and recognition are both important facets of his desires.

Finally. What the devil was wrong with my old phone, anyway?

[Beep. Beeeeeeep. Beepity. The pervasive sound of the buttons being pressed likely sounds grating. Beep. Beeep.]

Hm. Is it already calling? Well then.

[A low, irritable laugh.]

This is quite the amusing joke. If you're behind this, Mantis, I hope you realize you're probably going to be in trouble quite soon. If not...

[His words are cold, the accent clearly upper-class British. They mask concern.]

Then this must be some kind of VR. I want out of this simulation. Now.

...Is anyone even out there?
Third Person Sample:
They were everywhere.

Shadows, all over the place. They seemed never ending; a flood of darkness that crept out of the depths of the night as if they were made from it. He sprang back, landing in a crouch on the ground and using it as leverage to jump. The streetlamp that he grabbed onto was thankfully unlit. The last thing he would have wanted was to end up blinded. As it was the metal was just strong enough to support his weight.

Swinging himself up to sit up on it, he rose to stand there, trying to see into the distance. The eerie light of the moon seemed to cast an unnatural glow over the areas that could be seen. But this moment of reverie could not last. The lamp shuddered as one of the shadows struck at it and he barely caught his balance in time. Bracing himself, he mentally took a check of ammunition. Not enough. Not for all of these. Not by far. There had to be some other way.

There had to be something he could do.

Gritting his teeth, he looked around for something. But there was nothing. The streetlamp bent, twisted-

-and fell.

He leapt free, flipping over to land on his feet again, backed up against a building. There was nothing he could do. After all of this, was he truly going to die in what appeared to be some kind of Lovecraftian nightmare?

It was impossible to accept. There was no way he'd allow that to happen. What was it the others had said? Something about a Persona... If he could just figure that out, then perhaps this would not be a lost cause after all.

In the end, he had to keep going. This was just a respite, after all. Snake was waiting for him.

His revenge was waiting.

And so help him, he was not going to let it end here.
