When they were kids, Yukio was picked on constantly. Rin would run in and defend him against anyone who said anything bad at all about Yukio. Part of the reason he got assaulted by Astaroth is because the kid Astaroth was possessing said "You're going to need the money, your brother is going to that fancy school, huh? Take it as like a fund." and Rin immediately attacked him, because he believed that Yukio was the more successful one and Rin knew that he had nothing to compare against. In the ceremony before school started, Rin was extremely happy that his twin got the title 'Student Rep". For the first fifteen years of his life, Rin had been accustomed to protecting Yukio. When it turns out that Yukio had been studying Exorcism and Rin saw how, to put it simply, strong Yukio had become... He was jealous and awed at the same time. He vows to become stronger than his brother - a fact that Yukio laughed at. As Rin is an unstable part in the school, Yukio takes over the task of watching over him. Though he wouldn't like to admit it, Rin's role seems to have been flipped.
When his father died to protect Rin, he finally found his motivation - exorcism. He vowed to defeat Satan and to protect everyone, even if he was at a disadvantage because of his relation to Satan - he was revealed to being Satan's son. Rin was highly mortified by this, but after awhile he refused to let it stop him, stating that Father Fujimoto was his only father. He begged Mephisto Pheles to accept him into the True Cross Academy where he could learn to be an exorcist and have his revenge. Unfortunately, since Rin was no longer human, he had to hide his demonic powers from his new friends - his new tail, his power, his sword, all of it. Nobody could know and while he hated deceiving everyone, it was the best he could do. Rin was enraged when he found out that Yukio had lied and became an exorcist, but he set a new goal - he'd equal Yukio one day so that Yukio wouldn't need to protect him from demons or even himself anymore. Thus begins Rin's school life with his brother and new friends.
Rin is a fairly normal boy, a bit strange at times of course. He reads emotional manga - and cries at it. He is determined, selfless and hopeful, never giving up on his dream of becoming a Knight of the True Cross. His anger gets the better of him sometimes, but he knows when to apologise and is always there to help his friends, even if they don't like him or are scared of him. He is always giving people second chances, working with them to all defeat an enemy. He's good at working in groups, but bad at schoolwork. He's fairly lazy, sleeps a lot and his only real talent, apart from fighting, is cooking, which he enjoys fully. Rin tries to not let things get to him because if they do, he's liable to break out and harm someone with his demonic powers. If one of his friends is in danger, he will go to any length to save them.
He tries to get along with everyone, but many people become frightened of him once they find out that he's Satan's son. He doesn't let that stop him, continuing to try hard and work on his stuff. He's eager to help out anyone who needs him and is MOSTLY polite to his elders. He has a list of who's cool and he is fourth on that list. He has a very protective personality, supporting everyone and helping them out.
If Rin sees someone in danger, he is the type of person to step into immediate action, regardless of his own safety. He's normally relaxed and calm if people are just digging at him - normally because of his living situation and lack of money - but if you insult his brother, who Rin is extremely proud of and looks after, he will attack immediately. In the very beginning of the series, a boy being possessed by Astaroth is mocking Rin about taking hush money because his brother, Yukio, was in debt for his scholarship. This often makes him lose his cool and he may be in jeopardy of letting his demonic side out. Another time he saw an argument between his friend Bon and Bon's father that was very similar to the one he had with his own father before his death, and he was so bothered by it that he tried to get them to reconcile - too many things happened at this time, Bon's argument, people treating him badly, as well as a double agent in the monastery led to Rin losing his control and having to be rescued by his 'babysitter'. To overcome this, Rin is determined to become an exorcist so that he can avenge his father, get strong enough that Yukio won't have to look after him, and ultimately; he won't accidentally hurt someone if he gets control over his flames. Rin's determination is fierce and while people are terrified of his power and unsure whether or not he should be allowed into the True Cross Academy, he ignores it and pushes forwards, striving to make something out of himself, much like his father would have wanted.
As a child, he never had many friends - anyone he met was usually beating on his weaker twin. When he joined True Cross, he met people for the first time and enjoyed being in their company. From this, he is protective over the few bonds he has with people. When they learn that he is a demon, he is still as determined as ever to be friends with everyone. He's not used to having friends because he could never hold a steady job, didn't do well in school and spent most of his childhood at the monastery. The protectiveness over his friends also goes into his drive to show them that he's not going to hurt them just because he's the son of Satan - he does his best so that they know he's still 'himself', and not a demon to be feared. He's determined to show everyone that he's not evil - he wants to live for his father, be strong enough so that his brother won't have to protect him, and be able to help his friends out. Rin refuses to acknowledge the fact that he is Satan's son; he instead focuses on everything he can do to get stronger, to become an exorcist worthy of his father. He's determined to stay alive because if Satan manages to open the Gehenna Gate with Rin and posses him, it could mean the end of the world. Rin respects that everyone is doing their best to keep him alive because of his handiness as a 'tool' against Satan later on, his drive to become stronger is so that no one will have to protect him. But even more so, it's so that he can kick Satan's ass.
